Philipp Lahm believes the German national team can achieve a successful World Cup campaign. In an exclusive interview with BR24Sport, the 2014 World Cup champion outlined clear expectations for the DFB squad.
“The semifinal must always be the goal for the German national team,” Lahm said. He emphasized that Germany remains a major football nation and must once again reach the decisive stages of major tournaments.
After disappointing performances in recent World Cups, Lahm hopes for a longer run this time. “You want to stay in the tournament longer, you want to be there almost until the end,” the former national team captain stated.
Lahm also stressed that the team’s ambition should not change despite potential challenges. In the round of 16, Germany could face top sides like France. “As a great football nation, you should always aim for the semifinal,” he added.
This time, the 41-year-old will watch the tournament from a different perspective. Having served as tournament director for the 2024 home European Championship, Lahm can now enjoy the World Cup more relaxed — as a fan.
“I will watch comfortably with family and friends,” Lahm said. “Maybe I’ll fire up the grill and then watch football.” He admitted that he will still be emotionally invested, saying, “Of course I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the national team.”
After many years as a professional player and in official roles, Lahm is excited about the fan experience. “That’s what you often think as a player: I’d like to see the other side,” he noted.
During last year’s home European Championship, there was little time for such relaxation. “It wasn’t like I could comfortably grill at home and invite friends,” Lahm recalled of his role as tournament director.
This time, he wants to experience the World Cup differently: “Now I have the opportunity to really be there as a fan.”
