The surreal peak of Florentino’s press conference: “I’m going to cancel my subscription to ABC…”

After weeks of institutional and sporting crisis, Real Madrid experienced a moment of high tension on Tuesday. Just after 4:00 PM, the club announced that its president, Florentino Pérez, would address the media two hours later. Minutes before the press conference, the newspaper ABC published an exclusive by David Sánchez de Castro, claiming that Florentino had told his inner circle, before the extraordinary meeting of the Board of Directors, that he felt “very tired,” fueling rumors of a possible resignation.
However, Florentino Pérez appeared resolute and combative. Instead of announcing his departure, he called for early elections and denounced a “campaign of hatred” against Real Madrid.

“ABC says I said I was very tired before the board meeting,” he began, reading the newspaper’s tweet. “Well, thank you very much. I don’t know this gentleman. I don’t even know if he signed it… David Sánchez de Castro, is he here? So I can meet him and say hello,” he stated.

“ABC constantly publishes these stories without any sense. I wake up early and go to bed last. I work like an animal.” Florentino linked the newspaper to an alleged campaign against the club: “It’s an organized campaign. ABC is part of Vocento, which I think created Relevo. At Relevo, along with LaLiga, they created a digital newspaper that lost 25 million euros during its existence. Then LaLiga went to Telefónica, then to Telecinco… Their only goal was to attack Madrid and Florentino.”
**”I’m going to cancel my ABC subscription”**
In a particularly striking moment, the president announced a personal decision: “My father always read ABC and subscribed me many years ago. I wanted to honor my father, but I have now decided to cancel my ABC subscription. My father will thank me. How could they create Relevo, which nobody bought?”
“Starting tomorrow, I will fight with all members to prevent them from taking away our ownership. Where do they get the idea that I have cancer? And I didn’t even know… If they want me to leave, I’ll go when someone like now comes and beats me in an election. If someone beats me in an election, thank God. The ownership belongs to the members, not to a few concentrated journalists who, I suppose, are Atlético fans,” he emphasized.
Florentino directly addressed one of the journalists present: “As long as journalists like Rubén Cañizares continue… Every day you attack Madrid. There are more. One of the articles was written by a woman who doesn’t even know if she knows football. Why do you discredit us every day?” Rubén Cañizares responded live: “I’m doing journalism, I’m not attacking Madrid. You are attacking my work.”
