The Champions League has thrown a curveball into Elche’s plans as the season heads into a tense final stretch. For the Franjiverde faithful, the remaining week and a half will be a battle not just for European qualification, but for survival. Tonight’s opponent, Betis, has been given an extra incentive thanks to an additional spot in Europe’s top competition awarded to Spanish football.

This twist disrupts Elche’s hopes that Betis might arrive with some degree of relaxation. Realistically, a Betis defeat could benefit Sevilla’s direct rival in the fight against relegation. But those calculations are out the window. Manuel Pellegrini’s side cannot afford to ease up, especially as they will hit the pitch an hour after Celta, who are competing for fifth place.

So, the journey to Seville looms large. A large contingent of Franjiverde fans will make the trip to cheer on the squad, though they’ll likely have time only for tourism off the pitch. Yago and Adam are ruled out, while Rafa Mir’s participation remains highly doubtful.

The Murcian striker still has no official medical update, but his hamstring issues threaten the close of a season marked by ups and downs both on and off the field. Without him, Elche’s attack relies on Álvaro Rodríguez—who suffered the loss of his father on Monday but remains available—and André Silva. The coach is likely to rotate the starting lineup given the importance of next Sunday’s home match against Getafe. Yet, giving up any chance of picking up points at La Cartuja would be a luxury they can’t afford.

In Seville, Elche aims to live by the old saying: hold onto their seat at the top table of La Liga—a spot that seemed secure back in Christmas. They left it vacant for too long, allowing others to shift it away. Now they seem to have returned just in time, but with three matches left, the battle to avoid the abyss of Segunda will be brutal. Elche must not play the fool.

Mental Strength

That’s why the Franjiverde coaching staff places huge emphasis on the mental aspect over the coming days. They did the same last season and have reinforced it this year. It worked for promotion. Now, in another high-stress situation, they hope legs won’t freeze and minds won’t crack. Eder Sarabia reminded everyone in his pre-match press conference that exactly a year ago, all seemed lost when the last two matchdays demanded wins and hoping for results. It could happen again if football logic prevails in Seville, but defeatist thinking won’t creep into the Elche dressing room even if things go wrong on the road.

For the match, Pellegrini will have to carefully pick his starting eleven, as several players have physical issues: Natan, Diego Llorente, and Ricardo Rodríguez. Marc Bartra and Ángel Ortiz are out injured, while Ruibal—who tormented Elche in the Copa alongside Chimy Ávila—is suspended due to a ban. The plot thickens with another duel against Abde, raised in the city of Elche and trained at their eternal rival’s academy. Bragarnik tried to sign him but failed; now he could become a tormentor. Sarabia wants to anchor that seat in the elite as soon as possible—without doing any other math than winning: against Betis, Getafe, and Girona.

Then, the points will come as football decides. And this season, they look set to be plenty.
