Alba Torrens: From Illusion to History

Published on: 2026-05-12 | Author: admin

Alba Torrens is a special player, touched by the wand of basketball. Her qualities have made her one of the best in the history of the sport. For head coach Miguel Méndez, she is “the greatest Spanish player of all time.” However, the greatness of the Balearic guard (35 years old, 1.91m) lies not in her hands, but in her heart.

Her true strength is her ability to mentor and lead by example, inspiring her teammates through relentless effort on the court. She embraced her seventh EuroBasket with pure “illusion” — as she put it — leading a young, rejuvenated squad in which she accounted for nearly half of all international caps (216 out of 47.5%).

“What keeps me here is the illusion, the commitment to this jersey, for everything it has given me over so many years,” she said during the team’s presentation. Spain went on to claim its fifth continental silver medal.

She joined the project for the group: “I want to give my best every day to add to and build this team.” And she delivered beyond expectations. Her defensive passion against Germany was electrifying. Her extended minutes in the second half against the Czech Republic kept the team calm and organized. And her two steals against France — what crucial plays to spark easy points when the heat was on!

Against Belgium, a heartbreaking defeat, but also her place in the history books: with 3 points, she surpassed Hungarian Katalin Rátvay (748) to become the seventh all-time leading scorer in EuroBasket history (749). That wasn’t her only mark on history — Torrens is the only player ever to reach 100 points in continental semifinals, and her 7 assists against France tied her personal best (Ukraine, 2009).

Furthermore, her 222 games with Spain tie her for sixth place alongside federation president Elisa Aguilar, and her sixth continental medal places her second in the national ranking alongside Silvia Domínguez — just two behind Laia Palau. Historic numbers for an eternal player who is currently without a club.

EuroBasket: Spain 65-67 Belgium — a sad ending condemned Spain to silver. “We hold our heads high because we won a silver medal,” said the team.
